A day in the life of Emerson Reed....

I try to jump out of my bouncy seat while my mom is making my bottle....and then I cry about it.
What????
Excited about eating rice cereal for the first time!
Not so excited about eating rice cereal for the first time.
Doesn't everyone sleep with one thumb in their mouth and the other hand on their eye???

The Garrett Reed Theory of Time

I cannot believe that we have been in Durham for 3 weeks already.  I never understood it when I was younger, but life really does go by so much fast when you are older.  Garrett has this theory that it is because when you are 4, one year is 25% of your entire life, and when you are 25, one year is only 4% of your life...thus making it go by faster because it is a smaller portion of your life experience. Which, is why when you are in high school 4 years seems like a life time, and when you are 5 years removed from college, 4 years feels like a brief phase. Anyway, I wish things would slow down but according to Garrett's theory, since i am inevitably getting older, it is only going to go by faster.

Anyway, since my last post we have settled in here in NC. Our little apartment is starting to feel like home and we are enjoying the area.  Our first weekend here, I went to the Durham farmers market with my friend Sarah. Sarah and I went to high school and college together (both sociology majors), so it was fun to see her and for her to get to meet Em.  And I bought some really yummy veggies and cheese.   Two of my other good friends from college live here as well, and I have been spending some great time with them.  So, the transition has been pretty easy.

Last weekend my mom and Nana came up and we took Emerson to meet my great aunt, Lucile, who lives in Willimaston, NC.   As a lot of you know, my Nana will be 93 in November, and her sister, Lucile, is 96!  My aunt still lives in the house that she and her husband built in the 1950's.  The house is unbelievable.....I could write an entire post on it.  EVERYTHING is original from the 50's and is in fairly good condition.  The house is 7300 square feet and I am dying to remodel the whole thing, but that is definitely an itch I will never get to scratch. Anyway, it was so fun for Emerson to get to spend time with several generations of women in our family.  The Ramseur women are an amazing bunch....one day I will write more about them.

In other exciting news, we have found a babysitter that is going to be coming 2-3 days a week so I can go back to work part-time.   I am super excited to get back to work. I actually love working and I am excited to get to see G more often.....he has litearlly been working 85-90 hours a week!!!  I'm not sure how he does it, but he does and he seems to really be enjoying it. We have also found a church that we love, so we are excited about that.  It is funny because we just decided to visit it two weeks ago, and it turns out one of my good friends that lives here and our babysitter goes there.  I am hoping to start volunteering with their children's ministry soon.

Here are a few pictures from the past 3 weeks....our life in Durham as we know it!

Life in the Dirty D...

It's official....we live in North Carolina. WEIRD! It occurred to me a few minutes ago that I have never lived anywhere besides Charleston or Upstate South Carolina. Although we are almost the same distance from Greenville that we were in Charleston, I feel like we are a million miles away. I guess you could say I am feeling kinda homesick. And, although we sleep in the same bed at night, I REALLY miss Garrett.
Garrett went straight to work after being here for 5 minutes and he has pretty much been there ever since. Today is the first day that he will not see Emerson at all....I have a feeling there will be many more of those days to come. Garrett will be working around the clock for a while because it seems that he is VERY short-handed at work. Hopefully we can get some good people hired and trained soon, so we can spend some time together as a family soon.

Emerson (and Stabler) seem to be adjusting well. The apartment and the furnishings are nice...I will take pics soon. We really live closer to Chapel Hill than we do to Durham. We are located almost exactly halfway between Duke and UNC. I like the area a lot....just wish family and friends were closer. Anyway, here are some pics I have taken of Em recently...she is 15 weeks old today! Things have been so crazy that I somehow lost a week of her life...I just realized she is 15 weeks today, not 14. I told a handful of people today that she was 14 weeks...oops!

I like to call this video..."How to tell when Em needs a nap." Enjoy!

A little depth...

The onsie doesn't lie!

The following is sort of a journal entry that I wrote when Emerson was 3 weeks old. Typically I write things like this for myself...which was the intention with this. However, I am realizing that my thoughts in this journal entry reveal so much of what is really going on in Garrett and I's lives and hearts right now, and while cute pictures and anecdotes are also a part of that, I am feeling the desire to provide some depth too (which I'll be honest is not the most comfortable thing for me).

Having your first child is a very surreal experience. I don't know what I thought it would be like, but I am fairly certain that I could never have imagined what the past 3 weeks would be like (Emerson is 3 weeks old today). To be honest, the first 2 weeks of Emerson's life my focus was mostly on myself given my physical condition. Sure I shared a hospital room with Garrett and Emerson during that time, but I mostly thought about how much pain I was in rather than on the fact that I was suddenly a mother that now had a person who had been entrusted to my care. I'm pretty sure this became a reality to Garrett much quicker than it did to me since he had to do EVERYTHING in those first 11 days.

Even over the last week as I have begun to feel physically much better, my focus has mostly been on providing for Emerson's physical needs. Garrett has been back at work for about a week and half now, so I have assumed the primary role of feeding, changing, playing, washing, and attempting to get Emerson on a schedule.

This is a massive shift from what my role in our marriage, my family, and in my life in general was a mere 3 weeks ago. Three weeks ago I was a wife that kept the house clean, stocked with food and necessary supplies, and made sure the clothes were clean. I was also employed and I LOVED my job, the people I worked with, and the fulfillment I got from my role there. Three weeks ago, I was a wife, a daughter, and a sister. Today I have a hard time keeping up with things around the house, I can't really leave the house to keep things stocked because it messes Emerson's schedule up, I am for the most part jobless, and I am now a mother.... the mother of my husband's daughter, the mother of our parents treasured granddaughter, and the mother of our siblings first niece. When my husband gets home from work I am tired and just want to leave the house to be alone for a while.

Looking back I realize that I spent the majority of my pregnancy preparing to take care of Emerson's physical needs...between all the baby showers, preparing the nursery, and getting the car seat installed correctly, I rarely stopped to think about the drastic change that her arrival would bring to me emotionally and spiritually. I say rarely because I definitely thought about and acknowledged these things, but they were definitely not my focus and what consumed my thoughts. I knew my roles in life would change and that it would be hard but that is about all I knew.

All that to say...the past few days have been difficult. As soon as I think Emerson has gotten on a healthy schedule and seems content, she will spend the next 3 hours screaming. I should note that as far as babies go, I think we have it fairly easy. For the most part she is content, happy, and easily soothed. However, I don't know that anyone is ever prepared to hear their child cry for 3 hours straight for no apparent reason.... I mean just a little fussiness at nap time is difficult. Especially for someone like me who is very routine and regimented. If she would just stay on schedule...if she would cry for the same 3 hours every day, even that would be better because I could make it part of my routine. I am learning I will never get her on a schedule where something unexpected does not happen every day or every 2 hours for that matter. Garrett and I are blessed to have great friends and family that have been extremely supportive, coaching us and talking us through many of these issues.

In addition to of all the great council we have gotten, the Lord has been faithful (as He always is) to speak some tremendous truth over me today. Today like yesterday and many days before, I am tired, running on 5 hours of sleep broken up into 1.5 to 2 hour segments. And of course after Emerson's 9:00 feeding, when I really just wanted to lay on the couch drink coffee and watch the Today Show, she began screaming about 30 minutes into her nap (I don't think she was ever really asleep). So I changed her, burped her, rocked her.... still crying. So, I thought I know she is only 3 weeks old but maybe for my own sanity I will try to read her one of the 50 books we received as gifts. Emerson's Great Uncle Julian and Great Aunt Beverly gave her this book called The Tiny Bear Bible. It is a sweet little book where the momma bear paraphrases 11 different stories from the Bible to her little Tiny Bear. The first story paraphrases the creation story............

God Makes the Whole Wide World

Genesis 1-2

In the Beginning, before time began,

God was right there, and He had a great plan.

He flung the stars into space! He painted the sky!

He lit up the sun! He taught the birds how to fly!

But the crown of creation, He saved for the end:

He made Adam and Eve, and became their best friend.

Yes, Tiny Bear; God made us, too!

As I sat there reading to my 3 week old, knowing that she had no clue what I was saying (although she was staring at me intently), I bawled. I bawled in gratitude that I have a God that created me because He wanted to be my best friend and He wants to be my daughter’s best friend. I went on to the read the next 10 stories to her...stories that told her that God always keeps His promises, and He promises to: love and keep her-now and always, to help her always, to keep her safe and never leave her, and to always be her friend, regardless of the choices she makes.

As I sat in the glider, that I probably spent too much money on, holding my daughter and crying in thanksgiving of the Lord's goodness, I felt like a mother. I realized that my identity has not changed although my roles have... The Lord, our creator, is still my best friend and He is with me always and the most important thing I can do for Emerson is to let her know how much He loves her....without condition.

The past 10 months have been so affirming for Garrett and I in what we believe. Do I believe that God really created this earth, yes I do. Pregnancy was more a testament to me of that than anything I have or probably will ever experience. Do I believe that God created us because He wants to know us and be in relationship with us...yes. Just as Garrett and I wanted to have Emerson, not as some science experiment to see what we could create and then abandon, but to love and know and never to leave (no matter how exhausting and frustrating it can be at times...she is still fussing 20 minutes into nap time right now).

Is loving and providing for Emerson convenient for me...heck no. I can't get through a meal, take a shower, write a blog post, or sleep for more than 2 hours without tending to her...and I NEVER stop thinking about her and making sure her needs are met. In fact, in the time it has taken me to write this I have changed about 5 diapers, fed a child twice, been thrown up on, washed multiple bottles, held and rocked a crying child, and listened to a crying child when I couldn't get her to stop (even now). Do I think the Lord created us because it was convenient...no way. He created us because He wants to know us, all of us, even the irrational difficult parts...that is what love is. Loving us enough to give us the choice to choose a relationship with Him or to abandon Him...and continuing to love us regardless of what we choose.

Everyday I spend with Emerson, I begin to understand a little more about the depth of the Lord's love for me, which leaves me even more in awe of the fact that He sent His son to die for me...I can't even imagine.

I pray that I will not see my role as a mother as simply a provider of physical and emotional needs, I may never really feel like a mom if that is what I reduce it to. For me, I will feel like the mother God created me to be when I begin to put my child's spiritual well being first...never ceasing to pray that she may know her true Father in a very real way. I want her to know that she will never be alone and that she is loved in an unfathomable way regardless of the choices she may make along the way...the Lord created her to be His best friend!

Mark 4

The disciples thought that they might drown.

Their tiny boat tossed up and down.

"HELP! Wake up! Quickly! Lord!" they cry.

"This storm is big. Those waves are high!"

Jesus said, "Stop!"

The waves-obeyed!

Why had they ever been afraid?

The storm was big, but God was there.

Just like He's with us, Tiny Bear.

I pray that as a family we will never forget that God wants His best for us, and that no matter how big the storm is, He is there. Here is a little video of my Tiny Bear...I feel so blessed to get to wake up to this every morning!!!

Neither Here Nor There

Yes I just ripped the title of this post from one of my favorite authors Bill Bryson, but it definitely describes my life right now.  The past 2 and 1/2 weeks have  been all over the place.  I very much feel homeless.....which is odd because my wallet tells me that I am still paying way to much to rent a dumpy little house in Charleston.

Currently I am at my parents new house (which is absolutely amazing) in Greenville.  However, the adventure began a little over two weeks ago when Garrett left to go to Atlanta for three weeks.  Emerson, myself, and our dog, Stabler, all started out at the condo my parents were renting while their house was being built.  Then we went from there to their new house....that we helped them move into.  Mostly I helped while Emerson hung out in her swing.  The majority of my responsibility during the move was to babysit Emerson and my 93 year old Nanna (i must say keeping up with Emerson is easier than keeping up with Nanna).  Half way into week one, my sister was gracious enough to take Stabler off my hands.  Which is a way bigger deal than it may seem because we just had to put him on Prozac due to his increasingly neurotic behavior as well as a large amount of other medication due to some weird skin allergy he has developed. THANK YOU AMANDA!!!!

After week 1, Emerson and I headed to Charleston with my friend Kristin and her 4 and 1/2 month old, Bryson.  Kristin and I must either be delusional or extraordinarily naive because we actually believed that we were going to have a relaxing vacation....with 2 babies. On day one of "vacation" Emerson received her first round of immunizations which subsequently caused her to projectile vomit and scream a lot. Day 2 of "vacation" actually wasn't too bad...we went to Murrells Inlet to have lunch with Mandy and her little one, Harrison.  All 3 children were surprisingly well behaved.... and it was so fun to spend time with the Mandy and Harrison.  Day 3 was plagued by Emerson refusing to take a nap for about 12 hours straight and Bryson being insanely constipated.  I won't give more details than that....just believe me when I say it was bad.

The day after getting back to Greenville, Emerson had yet another marathon of no napping combined with lots of crying..... we had two great days that have been followed by today....no napping and lots of crying. I just told Nanna that I thought I was going to lose my mind and she offered me some of her medication for her "nerves."  I thought that was sweet and generous but I declined.

All that to say, I am ready for Garrett and I to be together under one roof again....I need some help and I am sick of traveling with a baby.   I miss my husband and my house, but am thankful for the time I have had with family and friends.

Here are a few pictures from my recent adventures.  Please pray that I don't have to join the Prozac club with our dog (worst case scenario I guess I could take Nanna up on her pills).  :)

Our trip also included a trip to visit the Demooney's and their new little one Tatum. Super dad Clayton, carried Emerson and Bryson to the car...at the same time.

Emerson, Bryson, and Tatum lounging on the couch.

Sweet little Bryson...words do not express how much I love this kid.

Harrison laying a super smooch on Em....we turned our heads a few seconds and he had a death grip on her face (it was super sweet and a little scary all at the same time).

Harrison, Bryson, and Emerson (you think we have a thing for names that end in "son"???)

Casey and Laura meeting Emerson for the first time...so fun!!!

Emerson meeting her Aunt Courtney for the first time. Court got Em the cute outfit she is sporting.  We love and miss Courtney so much!!! (i have no clue why this is underlined in blue)

The 4th!

July 4th of Years Past
The picture above is the one I posted of us last year on the 4th of July. Last year, as a family of two, we dressed alike in red, white, and blue (yes we know how cool we are) and went to see the Greenville Symphony Orchestra play in accompaniment to an awesome fireworks display. Things have definitely changed since then.  This year, we went to visit Garrett's family at their beach house on Fripp Island.  We were so excited to spend time with family, eat good food, play cards, and watch fireworks.  To our surprise, we weren't able to do several of these things because we learned quickly that overnight trips with a 7 week old aren't as easy as we previously thought!

It was not the travel part that was so difficult....it was being in a new house with lots of new people that proved to be the biggest challenge for little Emerson.  At home Emerson will sleep for 1 and 1/2 hours every 3 hours, our first day at Fripp, she stayed awake for 12 hours straight!!!! Talk about a cranky baby.  She was so interested in her new surroundings that she would not take a nap.  So, instead of watching an awesome live fireworks display with our wonderful family, G and I watched some awesome fireworks on TV while trying to get our little one to go to bed. Everyday we experience the reality that what we want to do and what is best for Emerson are often conflicting.  However, to say that we are in love with Emerson would be an understatement, so we don't seem to mind missing out on things like fireworks.  Plus, Em may be old enough to enjoy the 4th next year (or she may scream b/c of the fireworks, we will see).

Regardless, Emerson got to spend some invaluable time with Garrett's family.  Her grandparents, great grandparents, aunt, and cousin were thrilled to get to snuggle our little lady.....I'm sure they were glad to see us too.  It seems that G and I were so preoccupied with Emerson's difficulty adjusting to her surroundings that we only took 5 pictures.....maybe next time Emerson has a first 4th of July we'll remember the pictures.

(I know, she looks way to young to be a GREAT Grandmom)

it really has a calming effect :)

Emerson Smiles...just not on command.

Emerson has started smiling!!!! And not just in her sleep, but on purpose and in response to things. It is so cute and to be honest it makes my heart melt. This morning I was sitting with her in my lap and Garrett walked up and kissed her on the head (he was leaving to go to work), and she looked up at him with this huge grin....I loved every second of it! I am realizing what people mean when they say that having kids gets more and more fun every day. I LOVE every second Garrett and I get to spend with her...even when she is screaming (which she does fairly often). We are learning that Emerson is pretty spicy. I have no idea where she got her stubborn, persistent flare from????

Here is a little video of her being cute. She loves to smile, just not when I ask her too. The video is a little dark but you'll get the idea.

Garrett and I are headed to Fripp Island to Spend the 4th with his family, and then we are going to visit my family in Greenville next weekend. I am so excited for Emerson to get to spend time with everyone. She is at such a fun age and I am sad that our family doesn't get to see her more often. So, we will do our best to cherish every second we get to spend with them.

Garrett is leaving Em and I on July 12th to go to Atlanta for 3 weeks (I will be spending most of that time with my family in Greenville) !!!!! While we are sad for him to go, we are so proud of him! He got accepted into a really competitive program with his company and therefore has to attend a 3 week training session. After that, we will start to move a lot, as he will have short work assignments potentially all over the country. So, we could be moving as early as August 1st and could go just about anywhere. We will keep you posted!
